T welve aspiring finalists from China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand had a final showdown on the runway at the 2012 Audi Star Creation. The event held earlier this year at theTent@ Orchard in Singapore was hosted by Asia Fashion Exchange, Asia’s leading fashion hub, and sponsored by Audi Singapore. Over 250 submissions were received for the regional fashion design competition with the strongest showing coming from South Korea, which produced four finalists. Singapore and Malaysia had two finalists each and China, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand made up the seven countries that were represented at the finals. Entrees were challenged to come up with six original, creative and commercially viable designs based on the theme,“Fashion Without Frontiers”. The competition was opened to designers between 16 and 35 with less than two years of experience in the fashion industry. It took the six judges an intense month to find the twelve aspiring fashion stars that would transform their ideas into catwalk-ready collections for the final. The youngest finalist was 20-year-old Temasek Polytechnic Apparel Design and Merchandising student Eugenice Chen from Singapore and the oldest contender was South Korea’s KoYoungji, 32. Vice-President of the Textile and Fashion Federation (Singapore), Mr David Wang, who has judged on the Audi Star Creation panel three times, said this year’s judging was significantly harder given the sheer number of entries and the rising standards of submissions, with a record number of 255 entries from 13 countries. “ The theme was deliberately chosen to allow for a wide interpretation, but we were surprised at how far some designers were able to push it while still infusing their collections with both personal and cultural styles.” Audi Singapore, the competition’s presenting sponsor, awarded winners Liang Wang (Roderic) from China, Ko Youngji from South Korea and Soravit

Kaewkamon from Thailand $10,000 cash price each, a one-year internship with leading fashion retailer FJ Benjamin and the chance to develop a capsule collection that would be launched at Audi Star Creation in 2013. The award for Audi Young Designer went to Liang Wang (Roderic) whose collection ‘Tissue Of innovation, technology and progression. He also received an additional $10,000 cash prize.
