C hristopher Nolan,who brought us box office hits such as Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige and Inception, is one of Hollywood’s most powerful and influential directors. His filming career began 14 years ago when the talented director made his film debut with Following , a taut and densely intelligent thriller about a young writer who follows strangers on the streets of London and meets a thief who introduces him to his perverse world of burglary.This led Nolan to the critically acclaimed breakthrough film Memento in 2000 , starring Guy Pearce as a man who is determined to fathom the identity of – and then take revenge on – his wife’s killer. Nolan’s filming style has been described as neo-noir, nonlinear, psychological, brilliant and complex with playful narrative ingenuity. Christopher Nolan, born in July 1970 to an English father and an American mother, spent his childhood between England and the United States. At the age of seven, Nolan showed signs of filmmaking talents, using his father’s Super 8 camera and toy action figures to shoot scenes. Later in life, he would collaborate with his younger brother, Jonathan, a screenwriter on film scripts; the first being the neo- noir thriller Memento . Whilst studying English literature at University College London Nolan took advantage of the university’s film-making facilities. Short films made before his big debut were Tarantella in 1989, Larceny in 1996 and Doodlebug in 1997. After successfully reviving the Batman film franchise for Warner Bros., Nolan became the first director to complete a trilogy of Batman films with Batman Begins in 2005, The Dark Knight in 2008 and The Dark Knight Rises in 2012.
