Happy Halloween from Kids Ink NW Kids Ink NW is excited to bring you our October issue full of pumpkins, creepy crawlies and mysterious beasts said to roam our fair region. The tales within these pages come from the minds and pens of little goblins from all over SWWashington. Stretching from Ridgefield to Washougal and all parts in between, we have received submissions from families, writ- ing contests as well as the growing list of public and private schools we have partnered with. We continue to be amazed, both with the feedback the magazine has re- ceived as well as the incredible submissions that area children have sent us. The artwork, photography and stories are so much fun to work into the magazine. Perhaps what is most amazing, is that Kids Ink NW is doing exactly what we had hoped it would - creating a charge of excitement in children to see pen and paper as tools for expression and fun, not torture devices wielded by teachers and parents. Thank you to those businesses that support Kids Ink NW and especially to the young writers, photographers and artists that truly make the magazine the special publication that it is. Sharing Christmas By Kiara H., 7

This Christmas my family is making crafts and selling them at a craft fair. We are making candy cane decorations, creating ornaments and holiday jewelry and making Christmas note cards. Each item we sell will help us raise money for the group we want to share with this Christmas. My grandpa is in charge of planning an annual foster care Christmas Party. Foster kids attend the party and receive stock- ings with presents, eat a yummy meal and play games. This year my brothers and I decided we would share with local foster kids. We will help decorate the tree for the party, stuff stockings and purchase items for the kids who attend the party. It is our way of helping the community and sharing the love of Christmas. We hope you can stop by our table at the Holly Days Craft Fair & Pancake Breakfast with Santa on November 10th.

My dad and I went on the Bigfoot Trail in N. Bonneville, WA. You start by follow- ing footprints in from the road. There a family of Bigfoot meet you at a sign. The sign told us to follow the trail of prints and find all of the hiding Bigfoot. The Bigfoot we had to find were called the “Littlefeet Clan”. Sometimes they are called Sasquatch. Along the path, signs stop you. They talk about nature and give

hints to where the Littlefeet are hiding. Some were up in trees, behind rocks or behind trees. I thought they were cute. Each creature was carved from huge logs. There are over fifteen Bigfoot hiding along the trail. We also saw squirrels, hawks and an eagle. My Dad and I had so much fun, we brought our friends to the trail.

Tales from the Pumpkin Patch by Logan H, 9 I went to Fazio Farms Pumpkin Patch in Portland, OR. We played in a haybale maze and climbed a hay bale pyramid. We played a fun game of tag in the maze, the pyramid became our “base”. Fazio Farms has a great corn maze. We were in it a long time before we found our way out. I also got to ride a horse that was there from Horse Haven Farms.

My thoughts:

CORNundrums can be found throughout the maze. They are a fun twist on the traditional corn maze. The CORNundrums even inspired our family to try to come up with some of our own.

Down, Set...Hike! Hayden S., 8

This was the second year that I played flag football. Each time I play, I learn more. When we get to the field, we warm up with another player by throwing the football. In practice, we learn plays, throw, catch and play games. My favorite game is “bulldog” where one player is the bulldog and the other players try to move from one endzone to the other without the bulldog pulling our flags. If you are caught, then you become a bulldog too. We also play a game called the “gauntlet” With this game, defenders stand on a square and cannot move. The player with the ball has to twist and turn as they run by to avoid being tackled. In games, the coaches decide if you are offense or defense. My favorite on de- fense is safety. You get to run the field fast and pull flags. You can’t let the other team get a touchdown. On offense, I get to throw as a quarter- back and catch as a receiver or run as a running back. It is exciting to get the ball in the air and race towards the endzone. Football is fun, tiring and hard to learn. But you get the hang of it - with enough practice.

Pumpkin Choco-chip Pancakes You Need: 1 can pumpkin puree 1 egg 2 tablespoons butter 2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 3 tablespoons brown suger 1/2 teaspoon salt pumpkin spice cinammon vanilla chocolate chips

Step One: Mix the wet stuff Step Two: Mix the dry stuff Step Three: Mix the wet stuff with the dry stuff Step Four: Have a grown-up heat a griddle or skillet Step Five: Add a little butter to the skillet Step Six: Pour palm-size batter to pan in as many spots without them touching Step Seven: When the pancakes bubble, flip them Step Eight: Take off pan. The second side doesn’t take very long. Step Nine: Eat!
